Context of community support in LTER

Summary of LTER requirements for community support

Detailed requirements

  1. a. Requirements for the Community Support Subsystem:
    1. What are the required functionalities of your Community Support Subsystem?
Within the LTER data infrastructure tracking the provenance of the data as well as the use (e.g. download or access of data and data services) are planned issues. Currently no user tracking is installed. With the new version of DEIMS statistics on the level of generic users will be implemented, mainly to allow a better planning of the features.
For tracking the use of data, features to be implemented by EUDAT services, e.g. provenance support of B2SHARE, will be used.
This includes also training activities. Currently a collection of information on different issues (e.g. MD provision, use of the editor, etc.) are collected and provided via DEIMS (http://data.lter-europe.net/deims/ section on help and training).
    2. What are the non-functional requirements, e.g., privacy, licensing, performance?
The issue for tracking the usage of data is twofold:
      A) Data being not open (e.g. in retention period) – here privacy issues are important
      B) Data being open to track the use of this data – here referencing information is important
The use of data will be one of the indicators to check the successful integration of research sites into a network of data.
Training activities will enhance the quality of data provided, by application of standardised data quality control procedures for defined data sets. This aspects are still in development within LTER Europe.
    3. What standards do you use, e.g., related to data, metadata, web services?
#not fully clear what is meant here
Google analytics currently used to track the usage of the DEIMS interface. Still needs to be configured properly.
    4. What community software/services/applications do you use?
B2SHARE (data repository), DEIMS (developed by US LTER and extended by LTER Europe with regard to site documentation), standard data services (e.g. SOS, geoserver, geonetwork, etc.)
R statistical software, different models (e.g. VSD+, LandscapeDNDC, etc.)
      Google analytics
  1. b. Training Requirements
    1. What is your community training plan?
Currently a community training plan is going to be developed. Within LTER Europe the Expert Panel on Information Management is used to exchange information on a personal level and guide developments, e.g. DEIMS, towards the user needs. By this also dissemination and training activities to selected user groups are done.
    2. Does your community consider adopting e-Infrastructure solutions (e.g., Cloud, Grid, HPC, cluster computing).
Yes, in the long run. Currently the focus is on data documentation and provision
    3. Is your community interested in training courses that introduce state-of-the-art e-Infrastructure technology?
      Yes, on two levels
      a) Data managers
      b) Data users / providers
